DIABETES CONTROL FOR
HEALTHY LIFE

There are effective ways to control Diabetes and lead a very healthy life- Only that it requires consistent discipline in weight management, dietary control, providing nutrition and supplements, regular exercise schedules. We shall now see the options/tips for controlling this disease.
Minerals and Vitamins:

MAGNESIUM:

It has been demonstrated that diabetics with the lowest magnesium levels had the most severe retinopathy, and that low magnesium levels were linked significantly to retinopathy more than any other factor. Elevating the magnesium concentration with supplements would protect the eyes.

POTASSIUM:
High potassium intake is associated with a lower risk of developing type II diabetes.Besides, Potassium is a great help in controlling other complications due Diabetes.

VITAMIN - 'D'
vitamin D is essential for the islet cells in the pancreas to be able to secrete insulin properly. studies have shown that individuals with the low vitamin D levels experienced the worst blood sugar-handling problems and had a greater risk of developing diabetes.

Vitamin- 'A', E and 'C'
Research Studies reveal that the diabetic is unable to convert carotene into vitamin A. It is advised for the diabetic to consume the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A from a non-carotene source such as fish-liver oil. Diabetics and others on low-fat diets often need supplemental amounts of this fat-soluble nutrient.
Also recommended is a vitamin E supplement, ranging from 400-1200 IU per day and a vitamin C supplement ranging from 1000-4000 mg per day to help prevent small vessel disease of the extremities.

Some tips to control diabetes / high blood sugar:

1. Change the dietary habits to reduce intake of sugar and increase the intake of fibre and vitamins.
2. Enough physical exercise which must include fast walking, at-least for 45 minutes.
3. Keep emotions under check and avoid mental tension and worries to the maximum extent possible.
4. Divide the intake of food into smaller portions at regular intervals.
5. Avoid intake of excess salt, which increases blood pressure and aggravates the problems of diabetes.
6. Consumption of food containing magnesium help in production of natural insulin.
7. Other nutrients: Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C are good in controlling blood sugar.
8. Consumption of fenugreek with milk reduces blood sugar and controls diabetes.
9. Consumption of Jamun fruit,(containing gallic acid ) and powdered jamun seeds, reduces blood sugar levels and help in controlling diabetes.
10.Include Garlic in your daily food.

REMOVE LOW BACK PAIN
FROM YOUR DICTIONARY

Obesity is a pain down your spine
All you read now shall go in vain;
Low back pain is all that you gain,
If you do not heed to words of mine.

Obesity is the virtual mother of all diseases. Once it enters the system, all other diseases with related health complications join the band-wagon of bad health. It cripples all physical activities, including exercise, which is essential for good health. One of those health hazards is low-back pain, which gets aggravated by being over weight/obese.
Low back pain frequently occurs as a result of excess weight pulling the pelvis forward, which strains the lower back. American Obesity Association reports indicate that women who are obese, or who have a large waist size are especially at risk for low back pain. The spine is designed to carry the body weight and distribute the loads encountered during rest and activity. When excess weight is carried, the spine is forced to assimilate the burden, which may lead to structural compromise and damage (e.g. injury, sciatica ). One region of the spine that is most vulnerable to the effects of obesity is the low back; the lumbar spine. Lack of exercise and obesity lead to poor flexibility and weak muscles in the back, pelvis, and thighs. This can increase the curve of the lower back causing the pelvis to tilt too far forward. Further, this is detrimental to proper posture and as posture weakens, other regions of the spine (neck) may become painful.
One of the research studies indicates that heavy smoking and obese condition predicted hospitalization for intervertebral disc disorders. Another research study from the Department of hygiene , Kanazawa Medical University, Japan, reports that obesity impairs physical well being through musculoskeletal pain and difficulty of daily normal physical movements in middle aged women of Japan.
Obesity and overweight conditions are results of nutritional disorders. If you have been overweight or obese for a long time, your body may actually be starving for necessary nutrients! The best way for a weight loss program will require caloric reduction. However, for many overweight or obese people, a weight loss program means making lifestyle changes, which may include relearning how to eat, manage stress, and exercise.
It is vitally important to feed your body the nutrients it needs to be healthy and survive. No one food contains all the essential nutrients - it takes combining a wide variety of foods to help meet your body's needs. The best combination of nutrient-rich food and following a health life style shall certainly put you back on the right track to a healthy life!

ANGINA- Warning for a heart attack!

Angina is a heavy, tight squeezing pain in the chest due to insufficient oxygen supply to heart . It generally occurs when the heart works hard and requires more oxygen: This could be during exercise, at times of stress, in extremes of temperature, or soon after a meal. The pain develops at the same point in daily activity: viz. on climbing stairs or at a certain point in the daily walk, etc.,
The pain often radiates through the left shoulder, arm, or jaw and sustains for up to 15 minutes. This pain could be intense for some, while others may feel only a mild discomfort- Some individuals have no symptoms at all-"A Silent Heart Attack." Other symptoms include sweating, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, shortness of breath, ringing in the ears, loss of speech, dizziness, fainting. Regardless of the level of discomfort, angina is a gravely dangerous situation because it is often the warning bell of a full heart attack , when blood supply to heart is fully stopped.
Not all chest pain or discomfort is angina. Chest pain or discomfort can be caused by a heart attack, lung problems (such as an infection or a blood clot), heartburn, or a panic attack. However, all chest pain should be checked by a doctor.
Types of Angina There are three types of angina. 1) stable, 2) unstable, and 3)variant It is essential to know the differences among these types.
Stable angina.
Stable angina is the most common type. It occurs when the heart works harder than usual. ( Exercise, climbing stairs, etc)
There is a regular pattern to stable angina. After several episodes, you learn to recognize the pattern and can predict when it will occur.
The pain usually reduces in a few minutes after you rest or take your angina medicine.
Stable angina is not a heart attack ,but it is quite likely that you will have a heart attack in the future.
Unstable angina.
Unstable angina is a very dangerous condition that demands emergency treatment. It is a sign that a heart attack could occur very soon. Unlike stable angina, it does not follow a pattern. It can occur without physical exertion and is not relieved by rest or medicine.
Variant angina.
Variant angina is rare. It usually occurs at rest. The pain can be severe and usually occurs between midnight and early morning. It is relieved by medicine.
Major risk factors for angina include family history of premature heart disease, cigarette smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
Prevention Care:
1. Make Lifestyle changes- (aimed towards better health)
2. Reduce Obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure
3. Quit Smoking
4. Reduce Blood Sugar (If you have high blood sugar)
5. Avoid larger Meals
6. Reduce Stress (Try Meditation- It really helps!)

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

Cardiovascular diseases are major life threats caused by Obesity. In USA, one person dies every 30 seconds due cardiovascular diseases. This accounts for more than 42% of deaths!
Several epidemiological, pathophysiological and clinical studies reveal that obesity and overweight conditions are the two major factors contributing to the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Obesity is now a world-wide epidemic, more pronounced in USA, Europe and all other developing nations. Obesity/ overweight is due to the imbalance between physical activity and dietary energy intake. Sedentary life style, unhealthy diet and consequent overweight and obesity markedly increase/worsen the risk of this dreadful disease.
By now, it is an admitted fact that obesity causes insulin resistance and diabetes. The evidence linking early stages of Glucose dysregulation with cardiovascular diseases, needs a serious consideration. Overweight / obesity raise the heart rate and reduce the body's ability to transport blood through vessels.
Following are major cardiovascular diseases:( click on links for details)

High Blood Pressure Heart Attack

Aggressive treatment of subjects with impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance have the potential to reduce both the incidence of diabetes and its related cardiovascular disease. Another research study ( Ref: Health ramification of the obesity epidemic- Li. z.Bowerman S and Heber D. ) indicates that obesity and overweight related to health problems including prediabetes and diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disorders and certain forms of cancers. Obesity and overweight conditions account for a significant percentage of overall health care costs and significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality in USA and all around the globe.
Another research study states that about 17 million persons die in cardiovascular disease yearly in the world. Most part of this disease can be prevented by the elimination of primary risk factors, thus by the abolishment of unhealthy nutrition, physical inactivity and by the absence of smoking. The cost-effective national program, as well as the lifemode with decreasing individual risk factors can give a trend to decrease the mortality rate. Individually the usual blood pressure and cholesterol control, the inhibition of obesity and the lifemode without smoking are able to decrease the organic changes, which produce the lethal consequencies of this disease. The different kinds of diets can significantly influence the development of human diseases. The Western diet has atherogenic effect, increases the risk of myocardial infarction.
It is, therefore, a health hazard to be obese/ overweight which lead to serious health complications. Proper food habits, intake of proper and sufficient nutrition through food and food supplements, coupled with regular exercise shall lead to a healthier life. Weight loss and prevention of weight gain have to be considered as the most two important strategies to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease

OBESITY AND DIABETES

Unless I have compelling reasons, there are two places where I would not like to visit; 1. Police Station 2. Hospital. If you need renouncement in life, one visit to the hospital is good enough. The frustrating aspect is that we have to spend for this experience! Even that, has now reached a stage that unless you are insured medically, the expenses for the treatment is unimaginably high. The only possible way is to prevent diseases with a disciplined dietary habits and physical exercises. Diabetes is one of the killer diseases, that once it creeps into the system, the other ailments are free to follow. With the sedentary life style, food habits and work stress, the percentage of patients suffering from diabetes has reached an alarming stage. What are the possibilities to prevent/control this epidemic disease? Before that, let us know what is Type-2 diabetes.
Type-2 diabetes happens when enough insulin is not produced by our pancreas or it is not used effectively by the system. The food we eat produce sugar, which is absorbed into the cells, with the help of insulin to give us energy. When the sugar does not get absorbed into the cells, it remains in the blood and causes blood sugar.
Generally, the following aspects lead to type-2 diabetes and its inherent complications.
1. Age above 40 years
2. Obesity and overweight
3. Any one of the parents,(or both)suffering from diabetes.
Following are the complications arising out of diabetes.
1. Blood vessels: Higher levels of glucose damage the blood vessels.
2. Heart: Diabetes affects by increasing the amount of fat and homocystenine in blood.
3. Kidney: Due to increased glucose levels, kidneys are stressed to perform extra work and this affects small blood vessels and their capacity to filter. Over a period time, this leads to kidney failure.
4. Eyes: Diabetes affects blood vessels of eyes, damage the blood vessels and causes eye problems like damage to retina, cause cataract or total blindness.
5. Foot: Damage to blood vessels reduce blood flow to the feet and increases risk of developing foot ulcers and infection. Sometimes, amputation of the affected limb becomes inevitable.
6. Nerves: High level of glucose for a long time damages nerves. reduces sensation, causes numbness and a tingling sensation. Causes dizziness. Diabetes is a lifelong problem. It is, therefore, better to control the disease and avoid the above said complications.
Following are the general methods to keep diabetes under check.
6. Intake of food containing magnesium help in production of natural insulin.
7. Juice of bitter melon ( 4 or 5 fruits) taken in empty stomach, helps in reducing blood sugar to a great extent.
Other nutrients are Zinc, B-Complex vitamins. Vitamin C is good in controlling diabetes.
8. Intake of powdered fenugreek along with milk will help.
9. Spinach and cereal fibre also help in fighting this dreadful disease.
Obesity is a major cause for Diabetes. Obesity causes resistance to insulin and complicates the existing problems. It is, therefore, essential to keep the body weight under check by following dietary plans and proper exercise.

DIABETES AND KIDNEY DAMAGE

Research results indicate that Diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Final stage of kidney disease is kidney failure and is known as nephropathy. According to the Centers for disease Control, over 17 million Americans have diabetes. Unfortunately, one third of them do not even realise that they have the disease. Approximately 45% of patients suffering from chronic kidney disease had diabetes as the major reason for this dreadful disease, where once the kidneys are damaged and unable to perform their filtration of impurities from blood, there is no recourse to medicinal cure, and the available options are dialysis (Filtering functions of kidney being substituted by a machine) or kidney transplant, where the donor and recipient have to undergo major surgery.
The only heartening factor is that kidney failure does not happen quickly after onset of the diabetes, but will take at-least 5 to 7 years or longer. There are early and later indications to suggest that kidney is getting progressively deteriorated in functions. There are effective remedial actions to slow down the pace of deterioration and maintain the kidney functions.
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetics are likely to suffer from kidney disease/ failure, but it is more in the case of type 1. The symptoms of type 1 diabetes is diagnosed early and treatment plans could be taken early. Unfortunately, type 2 diabetes goes often undiagnosed for years, because the early symptoms are not pronounced. By the time it is diagnosed, there are irrevocable damages done and the chances for kidney damages increase.
Obesity and overweight conditions are linked to insulin resistance and help in onset of type 2 diabetes. When someone is insulin resistant, he will have high blood sugar persistently which manifest into diabetes.
Link between diabetes and kidney disease: Diabetes damages small blood vessels in the body. When the blood vessels in kidney are injured, kidneys lose their capacity to filter the impurities from blood properly. Body retains more water, salt and this results in increase in weight and swelling in the ankles. Urine contains protein. Waste materials start building up in the blood. Besides, diabetes damage nerves in the body. This causes difficulty in emptying bladder. There is a back-up pressure from the stored urine in the bladder, damaging the kidneys. Moreover, the stored urine in bladder causes infection.
The course of kidney disease: The kidney disease takes a longer time leading to kidney failure. Initially, small amounts of protein / albumin leaks into the urine. The filtration function of kidney remains normal during this period. As time passes, more albumin leaks into urine. This stage is known as 'overt diabetic nephropathy or macroalbuminuria. After this stage, filtration begins to drop. Body retains various wastes as filtration drops. Creatinine is one such waste and blood test for creatinine is used to estimate decline in kidney function. As the damage develops, blood pressure also rises.
There are early and later symptoms of kidney damage which are enumerated below:
Early symptoms:
1. Presence of albumine in urine. ( test on this is recommended each year by diabetics)
2. Weight gain and swelling in the ankles, cramps.
3. Frequent urination, especially during night.
4. Rise in blood pressure
Later symptoms:
1. High level of BUN and creatinine in blood
2. Less need for insulin or anti-diabetic medications due to slow down of kidney in breaking down insulin.
3. Morning sickness, nausea and vomiting.
4. Weakness, paleness and anemia
5. Lower blood count (anemia)
6. Loss of appetite, increasing tiredness, itching, muscle cramps.
What are the possibilities to prevent kidney damage?
1. Good control of diabetes lowers risk of having severe kidney disease.
2. Blood pressure and urine albumin excretion to be checked every year.
3. Ensure enough sleep (at-least 8 hours a day)
4. Regular exercise, followed up with 45 minutes of brisk walk.
5. Avoiding alcohol, smoking.
6. Ensure treatment for urinary tract infections, without delay.
7. Avoid medicines which might damage kidneys (Medicines for anti-inflammation/pain killers)
8. Reduce intake of protein more than the daily recommended allowance.
9. Reduce intake of sodium (Salt and vegetables which are rich in sodium)
10. Use of high blood pressure medicines called angio-tension converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors is proved to slow down the deterioration of kidney function.
The final stage of renal failure, occurs when kidneys are no longer able to support healthy functions, unable to filter the impurities from blood. Onset of kidney failure is normally about 7 years or longer.
SUGGESTIONS:
1. The best course, therefore, is to check overweight and obesity in the first place to prevent insulin resistance and diabetes type-2.
2. Avoid salt and sugar.
3. Stay off from alcohol and smoking.
4. Eat a healthy diet with good nutrition.
5. Keep the mind peaceful, to the extent possible.
6. Avoid taking fast-food, and food/drink rich in carbohydrate.
7. Regular exercise, with brisk walking ( at-least 45 minutes)
8. If you are a diabetic, then the following might help in reducing blood sugar
a. Change the dietary habits to reduce intake of sugar and carbohydrates and increase intake of fiber and vitamins.
b. Enough physical exercise, which should include fast walking
c. Divide intake of food into smaller portions at regular intervals.
d. Avoid salt which increases blood pressure and aggravates problems of diabetes.
e. Intake of magnesium helping in production of insulin.
f. Juice of bitter melon, taken in empty stomach, helps in a great way to control diabetes and reduces blood sugar.
g. Other nutrients: Zinc, Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C which are good in controlling blood sugar
h. Intake of fenugreek with milk which reduces blood sugar and controls diabetes.
i. Consumption of Jamun fruit and powdered jamun seeds.
j. Consumption of garlick will reduce diabetes.
k. Soak tender neem leaves and tulsi leaves in water for 10 minutes and drink. It controls blood sugar.
l. Spinach and cereal fiber help in controlling diabetes.

WANT GOOD HEALTH ? INCREASE INTAKE OF POTASSIUM AND REDUCE SODIUM

One of my doctor friends used to advise his patients, who were 40years plus, to label their containers of Salt (Sodium Chloride) and Sugar as ' POISON'. This is more pronounced in the cases of patients suffering from Diabetes and high blood pressure. On the other hand, increasing the itake of potassium does a lot of benefits to the human body system in all major functions. It is a mineral that is involved in both electrical and cellular functions in the body. It is essential to the smooth running of human body systems, just about all functions depending on Potassium to some extent.
Regulating the body's fluid levels is one of the mineral potassium's greatest functions. Not only that but it also has a great part in regulating the blood pressure. It also helps to keep the heart thumping steadily and regularly and is also essential to the nervous system. Potassium works to promote the proper functioning of the tissue that makes up the nervous system. It also serves to enhance muscle control plus the growth and health of cells particularly through its importance in waste product removal. This mineral is also vital to the kidneys in their waste removal tasks. Potassium also plays an important role to mental function as well as to physical processes. It helps to promote efficient cognitive functioning by playing a significant role in getting oxygen to the brain. Following are some salient points to note :
1. Increased intake of potassium lowers blood pressure in both hypertensive and normotensive people. 2. Increased Potassium and reducing Sodium help in lowering blood pressure. 3. High Potassium intake reduces the risk of strokes and prevents renal vascular, glomerular and tubular damages. 4. Potassium reduces urinary calcium excretion, creating poritive calcum balance, which in turn reduces risk of formation of kidney stones and helps prevent bone demineralization. This helps in higher bone mass and stops Osteoporosis, especially women. 5. It is important to note that Calcium excretion in the urine, causing complications of Osteoporosis and formation of kidney stones is directly linked with higher intake of Sodium. 6. Entry of Potassium in cells is impeded by insulin deficiency. High potassium intake is associated with a lower risk of developing type II diabetes. This inverse association is attenuated among obese people, especially in women. 7. Processed food loses Potassium completely., It is therefore advised to avoid processed food.
Potassium if rich in fresh fruit / fresh vegetables. A few of the fruit/ vegetables rich in Potassium are listed below.
Medium Potato -1 720 mg Broccoli- 1 Stalk 540 mg Banana 1 Medium 400 mg Tomato 1 medium 368 mg
Besides, Watermelon, raisins, dates, spinach, yam, ham, beef and milk are rich in Potassium.
One of the Herbalife Nutritional Products, Shapeworks- Formula-1 comes with high protein and high Potassium contents, which goes well with anyone needing a wellness product.
